They are truly a wonderland of vibrant marine life submersed below famous powdery white beaches.  Were it not for their sheer popularity, their austerity would transcend the customary experience of wilderness that has drawn weary urbanites to such pristine places for time immemorial.

Few Khao Lak wilderness-seekers yet realise, however, that a stunningly gorgeous, unseen tropical idyll called Koh Prathong lies just to the north of Khao Lak.

Clear azure waters magnify coral reefs teeming with sea life. Rusted-gold beaches hem in diverse ecological zones as this national park has one of the highest levels of biodiversity of flora and fauna in Thailand.

Unseen Koh Prathong is an amazing day tour of the island which starts at the pier in Ban Nam Khem just 20 minutes from Khao Lak after first picking you up at your hotel.

The tour starts aboard a modern speedboat, which bears you northward in channels through the mangroves.  There are only a few tiny fishing settlements and big jungle-clad mountains of the mainland rising steeply up from the mangroves.

After passing Ko Koh Khao’s wild east side, Koh Prathong’s remote eastern mangroves and innumerable water inlets, the tour continues to the fishing village of Ta Pae Yoi.[/az_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row section_mode=”normal” bgmode=”customimagebg” image=”187″ bgposition=”center center” bgrepeat=”no-repeat” bgattachment=”fixed” section_overlay=”no_overlay” sectionoverlayopacity=”0.70″ video_opacity_overlay=”0.70″ padding=”large-padding” padding_top_value=”70″ padding_bottom_value=”70″][vc_column width=”1/1″][az_special_heading content_heading=”JTNDZW0lM0UlRTIlODAlOUNUaGVyZSUyMGFyZSUyMGZldyUyMGlmJTIwYW55JTIwb3RoZXIlMjBwbGFjZXMlMjBsaWtlJTIwaXQlMjBpbiUyMFRoYWlsYW5kJTNCJTNDJTJGZW0lM0UlMEElM0NoMyUzRSUzQ2VtJTNFaXQlMjByZW1pbmRzJTIwc29tZSUyMG9mJTIwdGhlJTIwQWZyaWNhbiUyMFNhdmFubmFoLiVFMiU4MCU5RCUzQyUyRmVtJTNFJTNDJTJGaDMlM0UlMEElMEElMjAlMjA=” heading_type=”4″ heading_style=”default” heading_align=”textaligncenter” padding_bottom_heading=”0″ animation_loading=”no” animation_loading_effects=”fade_in” el_class=”white”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row section_mode=”normal” bgmode=”default” bgposition=”top left” bgrepeat=”no-repeat” bgattachment=”scroll” section_overlay=”no_overlay” sectionoverlayopacity=”0.70″ video_opacity_overlay=”0.70″ padding=”large-padding” padding_top_value=”70″ padding_bottom_value=”70″][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][az_column_text animation_loading=”no” animation_loading_effects=”fade_in”]In Ta Pae Yoi, you get to see a sea turtle nursery and explore the fishing village. Koh Prathong lies to the north of Khao Lak in the Andaman Sea between Koh Kho Khao to the south and Ko Ra to the north, both of which are as exotic and wild in their own right.

The unique ecology and beautiful clear waters and golden beaches quickly made visitors agree that Koh Prathong and its neighbouring island to the north, Koh Ra, be made into a National Park which happened in 2001.[/az_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][az_blank_divider height_value=”71″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][az_column_text animation_loading=”no” animation_loading_effects=”fade_in”]Exploring the island will reveal one of the main reasons Koh Prathong is so unique:  In just a small geographical area there are four unique ecological zones.

Beginning on the eastern side mangroves and beds of endangered and ecologically important sea grass cover numerous inlets, coves and small bays teeming with life.  The mangroves then give way to dense marine jungle with hardwoods and numerous palm species.

Continuing westward, this habitat tapers off to open savannah grasslands interspersed with trees.  There are few if any other places like it in Thailand; it reminds some of the African Savannah.  Finally, as one nears the western shore, the coastal zone of dense forests of casuarinas pines, palms and numerous other species fringe long sweeping beaches.

Beneath these waters, snorkelers and divers will not be disappointed with a vast array of living coral reefs teeming with life.  In fact Koh Prathong is a great alternative to the crowded Similans for snorkelling.[/az_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][az_single_image image=”98″ image_mode=”img-full-responsive” image_style_effects=”default-image” image_box_shadow_effects=”no-shadow” image_alignment=”alignleft” image_link=”no-link” target=”_self” animation_loading=”no” animation_loading_effects=”fade_in”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][az_blank_divider height_value=”71″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][az_column_text animation_loading=”no” animation_loading_effects=”fade_in”]Koh Prathong also has several unique plant species found in few other places in Thailand.

This includes the paper bark trees found on the Savannah and which some of the local fishermen, descendants of Moken sea gypsies, use in the construction of their houses.  The interior of these homes tend to be cool on even the most scorching afternoons.

There is also a very rare and unique orchid which is found only on Koh Prathong, the Don Malee.  This orchid has special hanging pods in which ants live symbiotically with the orchid.  The ants live on the orchid’s sap while the orchid receives nutrients and protection by the ants.

These are just a few of the numerous species of flora and fauna comprising what ecologists consider a “biodiversity hotspot.”[/az_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][az_column_text animation_loading=”no” animation_loading_effects=”fade_in”]The intersection of these separate habitats is also why Koh Prathong has a very diverse array of wildlife for such a small ecosystem.  Some of these creatures include:

  • Green, hawksbill and leatherback turtles
  • Sambar Deer
  • Red Muntjak
  • Wild Boar
  • Sunda Pangolin
  • Leopard Cat
  • The endangered Fishing Cat
  • The endangered and prehistoric-looking Lesser Adjutant Stork
